We presented all of our projects to Mr. Durren's Class at Epes Elementary in Newport News, VA. Well done second graders!
Backyard Birds
For our final technology topic for the year, we learned about birds. First, we read about birds using non-fiction text from enchantedlearning.com. We practiced highlighting important facts and information. After that, each student chose one bird to focus on for further learning. They composed their own writing piece about their bird of choice. Next, they recorded a podcast of it. Using Glogster.com/edu students created their own glog. They found photos, imported their podcasts and a video. They enjoyed this creative presentation format. Below are their finished glogs! Amazing!
As part of our bird theme, students worked together in small groups and wrote original reader's theatre scripts. For their characters, they became the bird that they researched. They picked a lesson or moral for their stories. Watch their final presenations below. Kids - print out some copies of their scripts and put on the plays with your friends.
First, we brainstormed a list for all of the letters of the alphabet that relate to Randolph, NY and Randolph School District. We talked about different parts of our community and why they are important. Next, each student chose what letter they wanted to work with. After that, we used Scholastic Keys Max Show to make our slides. Each student found the photo they needed on the class wiki, illustrated a drawing about their place, and wrote about that part of Randolph. They also chose an animation for their titles. Nice job class! Here is our finished class book!
First, we read Me on the Map by Joan Sweeney. Next, we made our own books about our place on the map. We included sketches of our rooms, houses, streets, towns, and so on. The books also had maps of our county, state, country, continent, and world. After that, we each made our own version using PhotoStory. Check out our videos we created.
Later this month, we will be meeting with Mr. Durren's second grade class from Epes Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia over the Distance Learning Lab in the High School. Our classes are exchanging autobiographies before we meet. So, we made this glog to share!
Matter PhotoStory Movies
In Science, we learned all about matter. We read about matter in our science books and online. We also took some online quizzes, listened to a song, and played some games about matter on our class website. Next, we used our Step-up to Writing outline to complete a paragraph frame on matter. We used our frame as the inspiration for our PhotoStory project. Students learned how to create their own background music. They also recorded themselves reading the text. Nice job class! Check out their finished movies below.
In Social Studies, we learned about community workers. We learned that there are service workers and production workers. Service workers help others and production workers make goods. Also, our writing project for Theme 3 was to write a friendly letter. To start our project, we brainstormed a list of different service workers at Randolph Central School. Next, students wrote a friendly letter to one of the people on the list. We received many wonderful responses! Then, we set up video interviews with the different service workers. Each student was able to have a chance to be the reporter, as well as the camera technician. We are so thankful for everyone's willingness to participate in this memorable learning project. We hope that you learn something new about service workers at our school! If you'd like to comment on this project, check out our blog.
During our Focus on Genre Poetry Week we wrote three fall poems. First, we brainstormed ideas. Next, we wrote a haiku, a cinquain, and an acrostic poem. Last, we used Photo Story to publish our poems and record our voices.
Thanks to all of the different teachers who helped us on this special project!

Reader's Theater Video Projects
During intervention we practiced fluency with differentiated reader's theater scripts. We practiced reading with accuracy, speed, and expression. Then we practice some more. Next, we made some masks. We videotaped our final performances for you! Thank you Mrs. Ross and Mrs. Salvaggio for helping us with this reading project.
