My Three Wishes I Love Winter! First, we brainstormed all of the different activities that we enjoy in the winter. Next, Mrs. Griffith modeled how to utilize the Step-up to Writing train graphic organizer. The engine is the topic sentence. The cars are the reasons with examples inside. The caboose is the conclusion sentence. Then students took their own ideas and organized them. Last, they used the color-coded paragraph frame to finish their writing piece. For our final draft, students fluently read their pieces and recorded them on the ipod.
I know many things about..... In small reading groups last week, we practiced the skill of finding main idea and supporting details in non-fiction selections. First, we read and discussed the book as a small group. Next, students used their dry-erase boards to record the main idea and supporting details. For example, the students who read about earthworms wrote earthworms for their main idea and used the book to locate three or more things that they learned about the topic of earthworms. Then students used the I know many things about... Step-up to Writing paragraph frame to gather all of their ideas. Last, students learned how to record themselves on the ipod. We have these podcasts in our blog so that others can comment with encouraging words about their finished pieces.
Polar Bears During the month of February, we have been learning about Arctic animals. Each student is researching their own animal. But as a class, we learned about polar bears. Students worked in small groups to read little books from Enchanted Learning about polar bears. Next, they completed the I know many things about... paragraph frame independently. Here are their finished pieces that they recorded themselves. Nice job class!
