6. Facebook

OK, so we've had a class facebook site for awhile now...thoughts on it?  Do you think it is helping you know what is going on in class, giving you a place to communicate with me, etc?  Should I continue using it as a communication tool?

What do you think?

7. End of the 2nd Quarter

Well, you've made it halfway through 5th grade!  Congratulations!

So, what have you learned so far?  And I'm not talking only academics here-what have you learned about yourself?  5th grade is a time for lots of changes.  You do a lot of growing up and changing this year!  "Middle school" is a time when you make a lot of decisions for yourself and the type of person you want to be when you grow up.  You develop your study habits now and start to figure out what areas you excell in.

Share your thoughts!  I would love hearing from everyone on this topic.  What has the first half of 5th grade been like for you, and what do you hope the 2nd half leads to?

8. Motivation

Hello!  So in science yesterday, we talked about motivation, and you answered some questions about it.  I am really excited about reading what everyone has to say!  I hope to find out how to help motivate you better so I can help you be the best you can!

I hope you enjoyed reading about what motivates me to be a better teacher as well.

Any comments about motivation?  I would love to get a conversation started!  Motivation is so important to success!

9. Holiday Ideas

Okay, the holidays are here!  Which holiday do you celebrate?  Do you celebrate more than one?  What is your favorite thing about this time of year?  Do you have any ideas of crafts or projects we could do in the classroom?

I LOVE this time of year!  My favorite thing is giving gifts to people and watching them open the gifts.  Of course, this applies the most to my two children!  Santa always brings them great things too!  We have a special elf at our house that watches them, and flies to the North Pole every night to tell Santa if they have been good or bad.  Mally is a lot of fun too, because she picks a new hiding place every morning when she gets back.  Addison loves finding her everyday!

So, now it's your turn.  Tell me your thoughts and feelings about this time of year!

11. Challenger Learning Center

What did you think of the field trip to the Challenger Learning Center at St. Bonaventure?  Share your thoughts!  Be sure to include which team you were on and what your job was in BOTH mission control and the space station.  Describe what you did on the trip.  What did you learn?  What did you like the best?  What do you wish you had gotten to do that you didn't?

Your response needs to be at least two paragraphs long.  It will be graded.  Your response needs to be done by Friday!

Don't forget to check back and read what everyone else has written too!  You can also make comments on other people's comments.

12. NYS SS Test

What are your thoughts on the upcoming NYS Social Studies test?  How do you feel about it now that we have been studying and preparing in class?

TIPS:

1. Eat a good breakfast.  You think better when you are full.

2. Get a good night's rest the night before.  You think better when you are awake.

3. Relax!  You think better when you are not stressed out.

Remember, during the test, to:

1. Slow down!

2. Read carefully!

3. MC-Read all choices before making your decision.

4. CR/DBQ-Make sure you answer all parts of the question.

5. Write neatly!

6. DBQ essay-Organize with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion.  Check spelling and grammar.

7. After you write your essay, go back and reread it to make sure you answered the question!

Good Luck!  If you remember these tips, you should do well!

13. Hurricane Katrina

After reading about Hurrican Katrina today in Social Studies, what are your thoughts about it?  What would you do if you lived in New Orleans when it hit?

I know I would have been very scared, and I definitely would have evacuated the city early!  I would have made sure my family had all the necessities packed, along with family treasures, like pictures and scrapbooks-all those things that can not be replaced.

What about you?  If your family left, what would you have brought with you?

14. Global Warming

In Social Studies, we have been reading about global warming.  What are some things you can do to help stop global warming from becoming an even bigger problem?  Share your thoughts about it!

15. Gowanda Flood

Tomorrow we are holding a Hat Day to benefit the Gowanda Flood victims.  There is still a great need in our neighboring community, and this is a great way for all of us to help.

Tonight at Open House, cub scouts are collecting new and gently used bedding-blankets, comforters, pillows, etc.  Please help if you can.  I can also collect these items on Friday.

There is also a great need still for NEW socks, underwear and diapers.  I will also collect these on Friday and add them to our staff donation.

This is a great opportunity to speak to your children about helping others.  It is a theme we will continue throughout the whole school year.

Here is a great link to show Gowanda and the flood.

18. First Day

Well, how was your first day?  I think it went well from a teacher's viewpoint.  It always seems like there is so much information to give out on the first day and never enough time.  I know I forgot to do one thing this year-a class picture!  It's the first time in 8 years I haven't taken it the first day of school!  We will have to get to it on Tuesday!

I would love to hear your thoughts about how you feel your first day of 5th grade was!
