Yes, your first grader will have homework! This is what I expect for homework on Monday- Thursdays. Fridays and weekends are free choice reading.
Students should study the sight words they bring home everyday. There will never be a formal test on these particular words BUT research has shown that children who are able to read these words instantly ON SIGHT will most likely be successful readers.
Everyone should also be reading their small black and white books out loud for a few minutes each day. These books have to be signed and then returned daily for use with in-class work.
You can read anything else for fun that you enjoy - a magazine, a comic strip, comic book, your cereal box, even a book : )
Our class homework will change over the course of the year. The children will eventually have spelling lists to study and there will be spelling tests the second half of the year. I will often send home extra workbook pages (math and reading) that are just "for fun" and don't have to be signed or returned. Any papers that are stamped "homework" must be completed and returned to school as soon as possible. If your child is having difficulty completing in-class work he or she may bring those papers home for extra help from family to complete. These should always be finished and returned as soon as possible.
