Cardinal Rules

Code of Conduct

Gail N. Chapman Elementary School has four expectations that we expect everyone in our school to abide by. We call these expectations the Honor Code.

  • Respect everyone and everything

  • Be responsible

  • Be safe

  • Be honest at all times

It is our goal to make the understanding of the Honor Code as clear and easy for children as possible.  To help, we have developed five Cardinal Rules:

  1. Follow directions the first time they are given.

  2. Raise your hand and wait to be recognized before speaking.

  3. Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself.

  4. Be prepared for class.

  5. Appropriate language will be used at all times with all students and adults.

The most important piece of the program is teaching the expectations.  As with any job, position, activity or place, one needs to know what is expected within that setting in order to be successful.  If students know what is expected from every classroom and/or area in the school because it is the same no matter where she or he goes, they will have no question of how they are to behave.

Office Discipline Referral Forms

For those children who choose not to follow the Cardinal Rules, their teacher has developed a list of consequences.  An office discipline referral (ODR) will be completed as a final consequence.  If an ODR is completed, the student will go directly to the principal and either a detention or ISS (in-school suspension) will be assigned.  This should occur rarely.
